Richard Stapleton

EdD, NCC, BC-TMH, ACS, LMHC

Rich Stapleton is the Student Development Coordinator at Walden University in the School of Counseling. He served as President of the American Counseling Association of Iowa from July 2019–2020. He also serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Child and Adolescent Counselors.

Dr. Stapleton owns a small private practice in Iowa City, Iowa. Throughout his career, he has worked with adolescents and adults. He worked in a rural mental health clinic in Southeast Iowa as part of the National Health Service Corps, where he worked with adults with disabilities and provided mental health in schools. He served as the Behavioral Health Team Lead for ChildServe, an organization that provides an array of services for children with severe medical issues. In his current practice, Dr. Stapleton is a generalist, however, he has a passion for helping other mental health and medical professionals who are experiencing vicarious trauma and impostor syndrome.

Dr. Stapleton is an advocate for payment parity for telemental health services, which is an essential tool to bring quality mental health services to people living in rural and remote areas. He is also an advocate to expand Medicare coverage for professional counseling.

Dr. Stapleton is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Iowa and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LPCC) in Minnesota. He is a National Certified Counselor (NCC), Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), and a Board Certified-TeleMental Health (BC-TMH) provider.
